Get to know more about us here

We are a Peace Training Centre, non-governmental, non-political and non-religious affiliated organization, which was established in 2016 by members of African Peace Institute (API) and West African Peace Institute (WAPI) Alumni Association of Nigeria (AWAAN) in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) – Nigeria.

In 2014, MCC-Nigeria commissioned a member of AWAAN to carry out a brief research work on the existing peace institutions and the gaps in peace building interventions within Jos Plateau State and its environs. The essence of this research work was to inform and facilitate the formation of a unique, relevant and context specific Peace Training Centre in Jos. However, the research work finally showed that there were no existing civil society organizations that had peace building institutes in Jos with the exception of the Centre for Conflict Management and Peace Studies which runs PGD and MSC programs in conflict management and peace studies, University of Jos, Plateau State Polytechnic running Diploma program in Peace Studies and LAWNA Theological School, Zaria Road Jos running B.Sc. in conflict management and peace studies.

Also, there was a gap in peace building interventions as most NGOs then were seen to be involved in relief material distributions after the ethno-religious and political crises in 2001, 2008, and 2011. In the same year, a strategic development plan was also developed by AWAAN members to give direction & focus to the new proposed Peace Institute. The name of the Institute was agreed upon by AWAAN members as Jos Peace Institute (JPI) during the strategic development plan. While in the process of registering the Institute with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the name was rejected and the option for Peace Training Centre (PTC), Jos was approved.

We organize and conduct a yearly specialized, culturally, sensitive and context specific courses in Conflict Transformation and Peace Building. We also organize and conduct a 4-phase program called Development, Education Leadership and Peace Awareness Program (DELPAP).

The Peace Training Program: covers a range of courses thus: Conflict Transformation and Peace Building; Interfaith Relations (Identity Conflict); Trauma Awareness, Healing and Resilience; Emergency, Preparedness and Response; Climate Change Adaptation Conflict and Development; Peace Education Strategies; Gender, Conflict and Development; Reflective Peace Practice (RPP).

Also, the Centre offers short courses in the areas of theories and practice of Peace Building, dialogue and mediation, women and gender mainstreaming in peace building, youth and peace education, human security and peace building, early response (building community capacity for preventive Peace building), trauma healing, terrorism and counter terrorism, Management of IDPs, Promotion of inter-faith dialogue and mediation, training of community and religious leaders in community conflict transformation and peace building mechanism, training of media practitioners in conflict sensitive reportage and peace building, emergency response and disaster management, introduction to conflict resolution from African perspective etc.

The training reawakens participants to critically reflect about themselves and the environment around them. This reflective process unveils one’s hidden potentials, talents and issues within the environment he/she lives in. it provides tools for community awareness, development and it empowers people to critically analyze their situation, identify problems, plan on how to overcome them and collectively take action towards transforming them. DELPAP is a 4 phased program which covers thus: Phase 1: Personal Growth and Development, Conflict and Peace ; Phase 2: Interpersonal Relationship, Community Development, Mediation and Dialogue; Phase 3: Social Justice, Conflict Analysis, Emergency Preparedness and Response; Phase 4: Global Perspective to Social Justice, Conflict and Development.
